LOOW research Certified environmental testing to be performed on water and soil and sediment with gas chromatograph with mass spectrometer equipment. We are currently seeking to split samples with the Army Corp of Engineers at the LOOW site. Splitting samples is the best way to reassure the residents of their safety. You don’t have science without duplicate results from an independent tester. If the Army does not cooperate with us, we will seek right of entry (R.O.E.) onto the LOOW site, through legal channels, to test the site ourselves. The focus of E.N.O.U.G.H.’s testing is in reaction to the findings of the Community LOOW Project. According to the study, performed by King Groundwater Science, there has a lack of groundwater analysis of the LOOW site. E.N.O.U.G.H. believes that there should be groundwater investigation of private property the is north of the LOOW site, not just within the LOOW boundaries. Contamination has been found on site. The question of whether or not this contamination has traveled off site and how far off site, posing risks to the surrounding community. This is the object of E.N.O.U.G.H.’s scrutiny. Completed pathways of exposure from the contaminated LOOW site to Porter residents living nearby must be ruled out to reassure the residents in Lewiston and Porter that the LOOW site poses no danger to their health and property values. The expansion of C.W.M.’s hazardous waste disposal business is another issue. When looking at the amount of hazardous waste that is in place at their LOOW location, there is NO DOUBT that an environmental injustice exists in Niagara County. We are actively pursuing opposition to any expansion of hazardous waste acceptance anywhere in Western New York, not just at the LOOW site. We advocate more modern chemical neutralization methods and on site treatment at the points of generation. But expanding waste disposal at an already overburdened area like Western New York is an environmental injustice. Take it elsewhere. Furthermore, the Cancer Verification Dept. in Albany NY is, in our opinion, not acting in the best interest of the peoples health in Western New York. They rationalize the occurrences of the disease by benchmarks of an already diseased society; and dilute findings by zip codes. They also do not utilize tumor data from the Veterans Hospitals. D.O.H. does not put any blame on Formerly Used Defense Sites for cancer clusters that have occurred near them. The Cancer Verification Department has yet to declare even one cancer cluster adjacent to any formerly U.S. government defense sites in New York State. They ignore the public outcry and take advantage of data gaps to silence the victims. D.O.H. must be held more accountable. They have a higher duty to assist and protect the public. |
